According to data published by SPARK-Interfax more than 700 companies in St Petersburg are in the processing of being liquidated or are insolvent. At the same time, almost half of debtors are from the wholesale or retail sectors and around 15% are from the construction sector.

However, as Head of the Dispute Resolution Practice and Insolvency at Maxima Legal, Sergey Bakeshin, explained to RBC St Petersburg, there may be changes in the near future to which sectors produce the most insolvencies. “The number of insolvencies amongst construction companies will only increase. Joining them will likely be a wave of insolvencies from developers which have been unable to adjust or restructure to the new rules on construction with escrow or specialist accounts”, suggested Sergey.

Furthermore, according to Sergey, there are a greater number of insolvencies amongst companies from industries that are not so noticeable in the general statistics, but are more connected to people’s daily lives – tour operators, air carriers, car dealers, banks and so on.
