Today the Legal Committee of the St. Petersburg International Business Association (SPIBA) held a conference on “Enforcement of contracts during the next financial crisis: what to consider and how to protect oneself”.

The experts discussed the experience of previous crises in Russia and previous court practice on contract law issues, the applicability of previous positions to the current situation and gave recommendations on how to deal with counterparties in the new circumstances.

In his presentation Dmitry Uryakin, Associate at Maxima Legal, considered the issue of breach of contractual obligations in connection with sanctions and ‘culture of cancellation’ and minimisation of its consequences. In particular, the expert analysed whether sanctions can be attributed to such categories as “force majeure circumstances”, “impossibility of performance” and ” significant change of circumstances”.
