During the International Legal Forum Maxima Legal and British-Russian Law Association have organised a seminar on English and Russian law

Natalia Diatlova - Partner

On 14 May Maxima Legal together with British-Russian Law Association, as well as Lidings, Withers LLP and Pinsent Masons LLP brought together representatives from international law firms to discuss pressing issues in English and Russian law.

As part of the seminar recent changes in English court cases with Russian parties as well as the use of Unexplained Wealth Orders were considered as well as the wide-ranging reforms proposed to Russian procedural law.

Partner from Maxima Legal Natalia Diatlova talked about current trends in the Russian M&A market and shared statistical changes in the sector since 2012 and noted the strong results of the last year, as well as the M&A market’s development prospects for the current period. Natalia drew attention to an increase in the number of transactions involving foreign capital by 23% whilst the percentage of foreign investors decreased by 21% in 2018. However, Natalia added that, at the same time, last year showed a steady increase in the interest of Russian investors in acquiring foreign companies in the field of innovations and technologies, as well as an increase in the number of business mergers in Russia in this industry.

The seminar was held during the St Petersburg International Legal Forum and was the only platform for discussing the use of English law in Russia, since the topic was not included in the formal programme of the forum.
