Leading business publication in St Petersburg, Delovoy Peterburg, has published the results of its rating ‘Lawyer of the Season – Autumn 2018’. Head of the IP/IT Practice at Maxima Legal, Maxim Ali, has been awarded first place in the nomination of ‘Transactions’ with his matter involving the financial bitcoin platform Zodiaq which organised an ICO.

“It is nice to see that our firm’s achievements, particularly in the practice for intellectual property, has been so highly assessed by professionals and businesses. In the north-west region of Russia, there are not many regional ratings that have the same high standard as Delovoy Petersburg’s which makes this award even more satisfying. I congratulate the other lawyers who won their nominations,” commented Maxim Ali.

Russian start-up Zodiaq is involved in creating a crypto-currency bank and exchange, as well as a hedge fund and universal payment system. The project was one of the first virtual banks which had obtained a licence for a full range of financial operations for individuals and legal entities with tokens and crypto-currencies: opening accounts, accepting deposits and providing loans. The ICO to raise $104 million took place in May 2018.

As part of its legal support for the project, lawyers from Maxima Legal, analysed the scheme created by international holding Zodiaq, advised the company on questions relating to its dealings with investors and final consumers as well as assisting the company in drafting legal documentation needed to operate its website and other services of the project. The work in this project was complicated by the nature of the crypto-currency market, ICO and the wide transactional nature of the project: in order to provide the client with the optimal legal structure, lawyers from Maxima Legal had to consider the legislation of more than ten jurisdictions.
