Pravo.ru published a review of legislative changes that entered into force in June 2019. Among the most significant changes, the website highlighted the possibility of temporary legal protection for industrial designs for which a patent application has been filed.

Commenting on the new mechanism, Maxim Ali, Head of the Intellectual Property and Information Law practice at Maxima Legal, stated that an industrial design is not the only tool for protecting the design of clothes or other products. “For example, fashion market players can protect their rights to fashion design, viewing it as an object of copyright (and not patent) rights, as well as initiate a case of unfair competition related to imitating the appearance of goods”, commented Maxim.
