Natalia Demina has talked to Advokatskaya Gazeta about the nuances of protecting right to privacy

The Officer of the High Commissioner of the UN on Human Rights has prepared a report on trends relating to privacy and a right to family life. In particular the report notes that the pace of technology development is creating opportunities for the unprecedented collection and processing of personal data for the purpose of manipulating people’s behaviour.

For Advokatskaya Gazeta, Senior Associate and Head of the Private Wealth Practice at Maxima Legal, Natalia Demina, talked about the mechanism to protect an individual’s right to privacy in Russia.  Natalia noted the frequent lack of technical and legal means to identify online offenders.

“When registering as a user on most internet resources, blog platforms and social networks, users do not have provide information such as passport details. This makes identifying potential respondents often impossible. Frequently the only direct evidence of an individual having written a dispute text is an admission from that individual. Since offenders benefit from almost complete impunity, it is necessary to think carefully about amending legislation to rectify this”, commented Natalia
