Maxim Ali has described regulation of the internet in Russia as wider, tougher and more prohibitive

On 5 February, the international rights group, Agora, published a report titled ‘Internet freedom – 2018: delegation of repression’, which discussed toughening censorship on the internet.

Head of the IP/IT Practice at Maxima Legal, Maxim Ali agrees with the main ideas of the report. “One of the most interesting conclusions is that the state regulation of the internet has undergone a fundamental shift with the focus of the authorities on controlling large internet businesses who are told either: comply with our requirements or face being blocked”, explained Maxim to Advokatskaya Gazeta.

At the same time, Maxim noted that whilst there are now significant penalties for parties that breach regulations, the effectiveness of such measures is questionable.
